Book/ Travel Feature- Daufuskie Island
Daufuskie Island written by Sallie Ann Robinson is a great look into what exactly Daufuskie Island is to not only tourists, but locals and historians as well. Daufuskie Island is an island located between Hilton Head and Savannah with no main bridge to the mainland. The history of this island is rich and deep, and holds many different stories for a variety of different people. First home to Native tribes, then a spot for pirates, then a military post, Daufuskie holds so much back story, and not all of it is light hearted. With a history of slavery and scavenging to find food, the island is filled with secrets and small pieces of what life was once like there.
Today we can visit and travel to Daufuskie Island and really get a look at the beautiful island with a variety of identities, and it offers quite an alluring landscape. Since this island has no main bridge, its only accessible by ferry. This island offers a peek into what a lot of the islands were like before modernization and developments came around. It still holds all its former glory. That doesn’t mean that your time won’t be filled with amazing modern day activities though!
While at Daufuskie Island you could partake in a variety of different fun filled things like: hiking, fishing, biking, or horseback along the shore. Also, no need to worry about rentals, there are plenty to choose from when visiting!
While there, you’ll be spoiled with fresh seafood and some really amazing lowcountry inspired food, of course! We recommend trying Old Daufuskie Crab Company. This restaurant will give you tons of choices so you can get the island inspired dish you’re craving, including options of red meat like steak.
We wholeheartedly recommend a trip to Daufuskie Island, and reading Sallie Ann Robinson’s book, Daufuskie Island to learn so much more about this amazing place you’re going to visit. Get her book at the Binya store now.
